With the HoloLens Developer Edition starting to make its way into developers' hands, Microsoft has at least eased up on the restrictions, and earlier this week I was able to use the device for a couple of hours on my own; not in a tightly scripted, controlled environment, but without any supervision at all. And for the first time, we were allowed to take pictures and photographs when we did.The hardware itself hasn't changed a whole lot in the fifteen months since Microsoft unleashed it on the world. Even at that announcement, the company had a model of how the first production units would look (though the prototypes we played with were altogether more bulky and uncomfortable), and when I used the hardware a second and third time, it more or less matched that design. An adjustable band fits around your head, holding the thing in place, allowing the working parts to be adjusted up and down and back and forward to find a comfortable position.
So how can a developer work in a world of vague security requirements and unknown threats? Advocating for defining those requirements and identifying those threats is a worthy exercise, but one that takes time and therefore money. Much of the time developers will operate in absence of specific security requirements and while their organization grapples with finding ways to introduce security concerns into the requirements intake processes, they will still build systems and write code.

The Einstein Tomb project was created as a memorial to the life and work of Albert Einstein, a symbolic structure in the same spirit as Boullee's Cenotaph to Isaac Newton. Because the self-effacing Einstein--who transformed physics as much as Newton before him--explicitly stated that after his death he wanted no such memorial as a site of veneration, I designed it to be launched into deep space, traveling on a beam of light, never to be seen in terrestrial space and time. However, owing to the gravity-warped structure of space (which Einstein's greatest work--his theory of gravitation--described) it would return to Earth in sidereal time, an infinite number of times, or at least until the end of time and space at the death of the universe.
The James Webb Space Telescope will be a major advance over all previous infrared observatories. Its primary mirror will be 50 times the area of the Spitzer Space Telescope, and its infrared images will have eight times the resolution (about the same resolution in the near-infrared as the Hubble has in the visible spectrum). This will allow the device to capture images of the structure of the first galaxies in the Universe with unprecedented detail. The wavelengths that the Webb will image can not be seen at all from the surface of the Earth because of our atmosphere.

Recent years have seen a growing consensus in the philosophical community that the grandfather paradox and similar logical puzzles do not preclude the possibility of time travel scenarios that utilize spacetimes containing closed timelike curves. At the same time, physicists, who for half a century acknowledged that the general theory of relativity is compatible with such spacetimes, have intensely studied the question whether the operation of a time machine would be admissible in the context of the same theory and of its quantum cousins. A time machine is a device which brings about closed timelike curves--and thus enables time travel--where none would have existed otherwise. The physics literature contains various no-go theorems for time machines, i.e., theorems which purport to establish that, under physically plausible assumptions, the operation of a time machine is impossible. We conclude that for the time being there exists no conclusive no-go theorem against time machines.
